About Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic medicine is an amalgam of the old and the new, the East and the West, combining the wisdom and experience of our predecessors with modern medical research.
Like MD’s, naturopathic doctors undergo training at a four year medical school, during which time we are trained as providers of primary care medicine, with the option to take additional courses or get additional experience in order to specialize in a particular field.
We are licensed to order the same diagnostic tests as MD’s, including blood tests and imaging, and we are licensed to prescribe most medications. However the bulk of our treatments will usually be non-pharmaceutical, as we have very extensive training in the use of herbs, nutritional supplementation, and diet and lifestyle modification.
Naturopathic medicine puts a strong emphasis on diagnosis of the whole person; looking at all body systems to see how seemingly unrelated symptoms are connected, and looking past the symptoms for a root cause. In fact, treating the root cause is one of the principles of Naturopathic Medicine. While working with you to alleviate symptoms, I will also work on a course of treatment to address the cause of those symptoms.
