Diet in Healing and Optimal Health
Most people hear the word “diet” and think weight loss. However in the context of naturopathic medicine, diet means a way of eating that helps to optimize the function of your particular body.
Naturopathic care is more than just giving someone medicine when they are sick, it’s about creating an ideal environment within the body to encourage health and discourage illness.
Most new patients should expect me to ask questions about what they eat. This is not a judgment, I will not look down on you because you enjoy ice cream or cookies- I enjoy these things myself. However I will work with you to determine if any of the things you are eating are affecting your health adversely.
If necessary, I will work with you on ways to decrease or eliminate these foods in a way that does not make you feel deprived of the foods you love. If you have a history of eating disorders, I will not eliminate foods unless there is a serious health risk otherwise, such as celiac or severe allergic reaction.
Health At Every Size
I believe strongly that health comes in many sizes. I don’t equate a high BMI with poor health, and will not ask to you to lose weight simply because your BMI is a certain number. Research shows us that an overweight person who eats healthfully and exercises, has better health outcomes than a typical weight person who eats poorly and does not exercise. My goal is to help you feel your healthiest. If your goal is to lose weight, I will support your efforts by helping you to do so in a healthy and sustainable way.
